How It Works South-Central Iowa (HIWSCI) is dedicated to addressing the root cause of alcoholism and addiction — the mind. Simply putting down the substance or stopping the behavior is only the beginning. True, lasting recovery requires us to confront and change the underlying thoughts, beliefs, and patterns that fuel our addictions. At HIWSCI, we use a unique Group Sponsorship model, where all members work through the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous together. This shared journey follows a consistent and proven process that builds accountability, unity, and a sense of purpose — reinforcing that no one has to recover alone. Our meeting format includes practical tools, spiritual connection, and round-robin style discussion based on readings from the Big Book. Members also receive guidance through the 12 Steps and benefit from a strong, supportive community. HIWSCI currently hosts an open in-person meeting every Friday from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, welcoming both newcomers and long-term members seeking help with alcoholism and addiction. We offer an open invitation to anyone seeking meaningful, effective support in their recovery journey.
